If you’re planning to travel to Mexico from the United States, you will need a passport. If you’ve never been out of the country and need to apply for a passport for the first time, Lifestyle Villas is here to offer you some advice. Keep reading for a few tips on how to apply for a United States passport.
1. Apply Early.
One of the biggest mistakes people make when applying for a passport is not applying early enough. The normal processing time for a United States passport is 4-6 weeks. If you’re planning a vacation to Los Cabos, be sure to apply a minimum of two month before your expected departure date. If you do delay, you can request expedited processing, but that still takes 3 weeks and will cost you more money. Your passport will be good for 10 years, so once you get your passport, you won’t need to go through the process again for a while. You’ll easily be able to come back and visit our sun-soaked paradise year after year!
2. You Can’t Apply Online.
Even in this day and age where you can typically do just about anything online, you can’t obtain your passport online. For a first-time passport, you must present your forms in person at a Passport Application Facility. You can search for one near you directly on the U.S. Department of State website. Along with your application form, you must provide evidence of citizenship, photo identification and a passport photo. The acceptance facility will then mail off your application for you. You can only apply in person if at a passport agency if you have urgent travel. In the event of urgent travel, you will need to provide proof of travel within the next two weeks. (If you’re traveling to Mexico for recreation, you likely won’t need to worry about that.)
3. Make Sure You Have a Proper Photo.
You will be required to include a passport photo with your application. These photos have very specific requirements. The picture must be in color, printed on quality photo paper and be 2 x 2 inches. Your head must face the camera directly with a full face view (tuck your hair behind your ears), you must have a neutral expression and be wearing normal street clothes (no uniforms). Do not wear glasses or any hats/head coverings (unless for medical or religious reasons, which requires verification). The photo also needs to be on a white background and be taken within the past 6 months. Places like Walgreens and CVS typically offer passport photo services.
